How do you suppose we should punish a man for using experimental biological weapons on the people of his own country? Killing thousands for no reason what so ever? At least Hitler had a theory "if i kill all the jews, life will be better"... Saddam did it for the fun of it!!!
The only way i could see Saddam paying for what he's done in life other then being hung is to be tortured every way imaginable for 23hrs a day, 6 days a week.... the sixth day he can sit down for a break in a catholic church for service.

Because they usually apply absolutism when moral relativism applies and apply moral relativism when absolutism applies. Basically, whichever suppports their particular agenda in any given situtation.

Reply:I have to admit, I support the hanging of Saddam. However, for just a split second I thought of the actual act of hanging and it freaked me out a bit.
The thing is that people have grown so accustomed to the "easy way out" death penalties given that when someone hears of the more gruesome hanging it hits a bit more.
All we hear about now is lethal injections, which in my opinion is an easy death. When someone is truly punished by a more painful death it seems to grab people's attention more.
Reply:When people complain about Saddam's execution, it's not because they feel sympathy for the person being executed. It's because they're opposed to the method of execution and the nature of the trial. To be honest, I would be really pissed if the US did to its criminals what Iraq does to its.
Giving someone the death penalty and then killing them a month later (without time for a proper appeal and case) by hanging is very outdated and barbaric. Regardless to whether it's Saddam or not, hundereds if not thousands of innocent people have been killed by this type of "justice". So it's not that we're complaining about Saddam being hanged, it's that most people (including myself) are opposed to the way the trial went and the method of execution. If the Iraqi government wants to be democratic the it's going to require a massive overhaul of its judicial system and methods of execution.

Saddam didn't do it for fun. He just did it to put fear into the heads of the Shiites and Kurds that way they don't have the balls to try and seperate and create and independent nation. At the time the Kurds and Shiites were very rebellious (and they had the right to be consider how they were treated) and so Saddam went to extreme measures to stop them.

But they don't believe that death pealty, in which Suddam was hanged because of, they don't believe that people can take another persons life. I think, and many others do, that a life sentance would of been much more exceptible. Everyone is just sorry that people still have the power to kill because of the penalty's and laws that they have. On the face of it, this is wonderful opportunity to rant and rave over the faults of the global media industry and to have a pop at the media barons.
The trouble is that there are greater perils in a government seeking to appear populist by following 'public opinion'.
In the run up to the Iraq war 68% of American wrapped themselves in the stars and stripes and supported the war only 26% objected.
Only one in four Americans opposed their Governments strange idea that state instituted violence solves problems.
Two out of three Americans felt that attacking a country and the innocent civilians living there would somehow make things better.
The US Government followed public opinion then.
Now we find that the figures are almost reversed. Two out of three Americans say the Iraq war was a bad idea.
Strangely, it's not their fault. Oh no. The fact that they supported the war seems to be forgotten. The fact that their Government followed their opinion just doesn't enter the equation.
Rather than admit their moral failings - they blame someone else. The President, liberals - anyone other than themselves it seems.
Public opinion is fickle and flawed. Sometimes it is based around gut reactions to a symptom of a problem. Trying to cure symptoms doesn't actually cure the problems. Sometimes it will only serve to initiate a far worse side effect.
For example if you cut off the ability of 11 million illegals to earn a living the US, is there a chance that a substantial number turn to crime in order to survive?
The problem with the media may be that they are more concerned to increase readers and viewers rather than take their social responsibilities seriously.
However, it pales into insignificance when it comes to how the majority of us react when faced with a moral issue. far too many people fail to actually answer the very basic moral questions when faced with an issue.
Tell me when was the last time you looked at an issue and asked yourself about the morality of the situation?
Too few of us stop and consider the moralities and even fewer consider the other mans point of view.

It seems like if the media is biased to the opposite direction of your beliefs, you complain. However if you agree with them, you think it's "fair and balanced."

In the USA if they are really "rushing" to put someone to death it will take at least 15-20 years, and there is a backlog that means the average is more like 30-40 years. It cost more to put them to death then to keep them in prison till they die. They get to cut up people in little pieces and they are put to death by going to sleep (You know the same treatment as a loved pet)! So the only thing effective about the death penalty is that if you can finally carry it out, they won't be released because they wrote a book telling kids that you shouldn't do what they did (not saying that they are sorry for what they did mind you), and some Hollywood group will champion their release.

You also assume drug charges=murder charges. That's not the case and rarely is. Many drug charges are for marijuana and rarely ever involve violence. When violence is involved, the criminal enterprise often extends beyond simple drug charges to organized crimes and may include prostitution, gambling, or racketeering. Many drug offenders are non-violent or engaged in property crime. People don't get high and then go kill other people. Stop believing that old propaganda and look at facts.

Why do some people have bleeding hearts for illegal immigrants?
I'm not going to condemn their characters, but if they can't abide by the rules, why should they be allowed here? Who cares whose land it was in the past, the USA is a government run country and if illegals can't come here legally they shouldn't come at all.
But so many people feel they should be allowed to stay... Why? So they are from poor countries? What about the homeless, hungry, and poor people we have right here in the USA of all backgrounds and heritages but are US citizens? And if anything, its illegal Mexicans that give hispanic americans (of any nationality) a bad name and their the ones who are shaping america's negative image of hispanics and their culture as a whole.
So why do especially liberals have "so much" sympathy for people who can't respect the rules and don't even respect this country in general? Don't they realize they are disrespecting them too? The only reason they are working hard and being nice is to mooch off and get rich-quick.

Yes, they are givin us(Hispanics) a bad name. I am not too fond of Mexicans, most i know seem racist towards Black ppl, mestizos/mulattoes, and other Hispanics who aren't Mexican. Then they wonder why other Hispanics won't support them when it comes to immigration. I don't support illegal immigration. Why should they be allowed to come here, when they did break the law and then most of them don't make an effort to learn f-in English. They think that just b/c they come from a poor country that they will get a free ticket for everything. Well, they have to work for it, just like everyone else in America.

Reply:I agree with Mike. And it is too easy to demonize this group of people. The problem is that it is hard to tell who is against these people for the legal reasons or racial reasons. A lot of people suspect it is racial hatred under the disguise of legal reasons.
Reply:"They" is a pretty strong word. I have worked day labor in the Southwest..."they" are not all bad. Many of them were eager to practice their English with me. Some are just afraid. These are huge corporations they are working for...and nobody says anything about the companies. I mean they were building city blocks at a time at this one particular company and besides the owners I was likely the only citizen there. The meaningless of my temp job (sweeping out McMansions in a dust storm!) just made be feel like they were using legal temps to cook the books. Nobody ever says anything about the people who employ them (oooh its just GOOD BUSINESS to look for the cheapest worker...those poor business owners are just trying to stay afloat..blah blah blah..)

Depends on which reality you live in, I guess.
You happen to live in the reality where borders are absolute and government and society's laws are paramount , and anything that is not black and white is unacceptable.
Some people live in the reality where the source of their next meal in uncertain, where their lives are at risk on a daily basis, where they want hope for their children and just want to feel safe and productive.
Many of these people end up in a new land that they don't feel a part of, and isolate themselves within that new land in familiar cultural environments.
There are also some people who think that no matter our origins, we are all the same, and imaginary lines drawn in the sand in order to maintain social control for any given purpose are less real than the soil the lines are drawn on. That humanity has wrapped itself into a numbing blanket of shortsightedness, choosing to only find similarities between people that spend their time in a relatively similar geographical area.
I choose humanity over government.
Reply:I wholeheartedly agree. My mother had to wait 5 years in order to even be considered for immigration. My father's parents were granted asylum but it was still a very tedious process. When I think of people who with no regard for our laws or for those who are waiting patiently to come here to live, I can't help but liken illegal immigration to a slap in the face.

Klaudya: Political Asylum is a good thing. I would literally not be living if it weren't for asylum. Asylum (or as you call it: free pass) is given to those who can prove that going back to their country would severly jeopardize their life (due to any kind of political unrest in that nation).
SOME Cubans are given asylum. (Not so much anymore. It happened more often in the 60's %26amp; 70's, when my grandparents came here to the US). You must understand that Cuba is a socialist country. You have NO rights in Cuba. More importantly, Cuba is led by a dictator who has been in power for nearly 50 years! There are countless accounts of Cuban political prisoners that the government simply makes "disappear". Call me biased, but I think "If I go back the government will kill me" is worthy of a "free pass" whereas "If I go back, I'll be poor" isn't.

Yes, they are givin us(Hispanics) a bad name. I am not too fond of Mexicans, most i know seem racist towards Black ppl, mestizos/mulattoes, and other Hispanics who aren't Mexican. Then they wonder why other Hispanics won't support them when it comes to immigration. I don't support illegal immigration. Why should they be allowed to come here, when they did break the law and then most of them don't make an effort to learn f-in English. They think that just b/c they come from a poor country that they will get a free ticket for everything. Well, they have to work for it, just like everyone else in America.
Reply:We're sympathetic because we can identify with the struggles that drive them here to the United States. If a person is only making $100 a month to support his/her family and the opportunity to make more is just over the border, then I can see the logic.

Reply:I agree with Mike. And it is too easy to demonize this group of people. The problem is that it is hard to tell who is against these people for the legal reasons or racial reasons. A lot of people suspect it is racial hatred under the disguise of legal reasons.
Reply:"They" is a pretty strong word. I have worked day labor in the Southwest..."they" are not all bad. Many of them were eager to practice their English with me. Some are just afraid. These are huge corporations they are working for...and nobody says anything about the companies. I mean they were building city blocks at a time at this one particular company and besides the owners I was likely the only citizen there. The meaningless of my temp job (sweeping out McMansions in a dust storm!) just made be feel like they were using legal temps to cook the books. Nobody ever says anything about the people who employ them (oooh its just GOOD BUSINESS to look for the cheapest worker...those poor business owners are just trying to stay afloat..blah blah blah..)
Its just a matter of who your heart bleeds for more...if you are concerned about the huge real estate companies I'd call you a bleeding heart conservative!
--And believe me, if the stuff hit the fan tomorrow and my child was starving I'd be tunneling my butt to Canada too...so I guess that's why I can empathize with some of them.

Depends on which reality you live in, I guess.
You happen to live in the reality where borders are absolute and government and society's laws are paramount , and anything that is not black and white is unacceptable.
Some people live in the reality where the source of their next meal in uncertain, where their lives are at risk on a daily basis, where they want hope for their children and just want to feel safe and productive.
Many of these people end up in a new land that they don't feel a part of, and isolate themselves within that new land in familiar cultural environments.
There are also some people who think that no matter our origins, we are all the same, and imaginary lines drawn in the sand in order to maintain social control for any given purpose are less real than the soil the lines are drawn on. That humanity has wrapped itself into a numbing blanket of shortsightedness, choosing to only find similarities between people that spend their time in a relatively similar geographical area.
I choose humanity over government.
Reply:I wholeheartedly agree. My mother had to wait 5 years in order to even be considered for immigration. My father's parents were granted asylum but it was still a very tedious process. When I think of people who with no regard for our laws or for those who are waiting patiently to come here to live, I can't help but liken illegal immigration to a slap in the face.

Klaudya: Political Asylum is a good thing. I would literally not be living if it weren't for asylum. Asylum (or as you call it: free pass) is given to those who can prove that going back to their country would severly jeopardize their life (due to any kind of political unrest in that nation).
SOME Cubans are given asylum. (Not so much anymore. It happened more often in the 60's %26amp; 70's, when my grandparents came here to the US). You must understand that Cuba is a socialist country. You have NO rights in Cuba. More importantly, Cuba is led by a dictator who has been in power for nearly 50 years! There are countless accounts of Cuban political prisoners that the government simply makes "disappear". Call me biased, but I think "If I go back the government will kill me" is worthy of a "free pass" whereas "If I go back, I'll be poor" isn't.

I actually was involved with someone who was living here illegally. Liked them...but they were still breaking the law.
People shouldn't justify breaking the law because of poverty, because thats one of the main reason US citizens break the law anyway. Try changing how long it takes to become a legal US citizen, instead of letting people break laws in our country and then make excuses for them.

I think he loved it. Matt stated that he is into the fitness levels of the players.
This is what it's all about pre-season as the players get toey wanting the season to kick off.
Essendon will be a side to watch, as their fitness always let them down under Sheedy.
Apparently Matt Lloyd serves his master well, and is looking forward to leading the Bombers.

They don't. In fact and this is very sad, we keep more of our people in prison than any other country in the world, and we call ourselves a world leader.

Reply:All judges arent bleeding hearts. Some are too harsh, some are too soft.Judges are imposed with a great deal of power of discretion. When they are imposing a sentence they have guidelines they go by. They have mandatory minimum and maximum sentences they can impose.
Reply:Why do you assume they do, have you ever committed a crime and been in front of one? No judge I have been infront of has imposed less, or more, of a sentence (in the form of accepting or rejecting a plea bargain) than the crime deserved.

As for sentencing, judges should be free to have some discretion, because on a case by case basis, a lighter sentence would really be more appropriate than the max, or the max might be more appropriate than a lighter one - it is good that they have the discretion so as to at least appear to be fair.
Judges make mistakes, like anyone would, but we have professional judges so that justice is administered by knowledgeable, experienced people who have in mind the best for the most, with a view to basic individual rights. As opposed to the sentiments of a mob, the whim of prosecutors, the convenience of the police.
