Will my Bleeding Hearts come back this year?

Last Spring I bought a gallon size Bleeding Heart bush. It did very well last year. All the follage died off in the late summer. Which I know is to be expected.

The problem is...I thought they were perennials and would return in the spring. I know they bloom in late spring in Michigan, but my plant hasnt began to grow at all. All that is left of it is a stump in the ground from last years growth.

Will my Bleeding Hearts come back this year?
This has been a very strange winter. Loosen the soil around the plant and check to see if there's any growth. It should be coming back. I have plants just waking up in my garden and usually they're up by mid-March.

Reply:Yes it should come back, mine always has. Here is a little tip to help you along.

Bleeding heart grows best in cool, moist conditions. Apply a thin layer of compost each spring, followed by a 2-inch layer of mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Water plants during the summer if rainfall is less than 1 inch per week. After the first killing frost, cut stems back to an inch or two above soil line.
Reply:Give it some more time, clean around the base of plant, and just wait awhile. Bleeding Hearts are perennials, so it might be another year before you see it again, it is said of perennials-- 1st year "it sleeps" 2nd year "it creeps" 3rd year "it leaps" so just wait.
Reply:Yes, it should come back give it a little time it's just the beginning of Spring and this plant usually is from the end of spring to early summer. You can top dress it with a good compost to promote growth. Once it starts growing I would use a micro-nutrient to promote good growth and alot of flowers. I use Spray and Grow Micro-nutrient Concentrate which I purchase from QVC. I only have to buy one bottle per season (about $20.00) and I use it on all of my outside plants, my veggie garden, and inside house plants. I works wonderful on all plants it will create larger and more veggies or fruits - flowering plants will have at least twice as many flowers if not more and inside plants look healthier and fuller. Be patient it will grow...
Reply:They should. Mine haven't but they are perrennials. so, let's hope anyway.
Reply:There is a variety that is a perennial and another that is an annual. Use some root stimulator on them.
Reply:I would wait until it warms up a bit more, they should come back bigger and better
Reply:IT SHOULD. BLEEDING HEARTS COME UP IN LATE SPRING, SO THERE IS HOPE
Reply:Yes they will. They die back completely and start to come up anywhere between Feb and end of April depending on where you live. Don't worry they will be back :)
