How do you kill bleeding hearts?

My mother tried digging them up to put hostas in their place, but now the bleeding hearts are coming back with a vengance everywhere! Is there any way to kill them (rather than constantly pulling them out) without poisoning the surrounding ground?

How do you kill bleeding hearts?
Thick layer of newspaper, then top with mulch all around the hostas. Or if you haven't planted the hostas yet, you can do the whole area and just make planting holes for the hostas. Wet the newspaper so it stays put, and use a thick layer (several sheets). This will smother anything underneath, then will break down eventually as the hostas get bigger.
Reply:Are you sure they are bleeding hearts? That sounds strange that they would come back after digging them up since they don't seed. Your mother must not have dug up all the roots. All you can do is keep digging them up. Though I think that leaving them there and mixing in Hosta's would look very good. Bleeding hearts die back to the ground in the summer when the hosta's are starting to bloom. It's a perfect pair together.
Reply:Brainwash them.
