What plant looks good when my bleeding heart plant dies down in august?

Perennial sunflowers (Helianthus spp.), like their annual sunflower cousins, have a cheerful yellow bloom.

Hummingbirds like red flowers. For the deepest velvety-red color you can imagine, there is Lobelia cardinalis, Cardinal flower. Although Cardinal flower starts blooming already in July, its habit of opening up the flowers along its long stalk just a few at a time, from bottom to top, extends its bloom season long into October. Part sun is better than full sun for Lobelias, as both leaves and blooms will fade in full sun, and I have even seen the leaves burn where the sun exposure was very strong.

Windflower (Anemone japonica) - This is a dependable late perennial that stands out even in partial shade. The flower is an over sized cosmos shaped bloom with a green center that is available in shades of pink, purple and white. The handsome 3 lobed leaves are attractive and seem to be ignored by deer.

Brazilian verbena (Verbena bonariensis) - Not a true perennial, more of a biennial.

You can also add color with Echinecia, it comes in White and purple, they are hardy and come back every ear. I also like Russian Sage (Doubles in size after drying back each year), Purple Salvia (Dies back in fall to return bigger and more beautiful). Cat nip blooms all season long (great in soaps and teas.) Cornflowers, Shasta Daisies and Mum's. The list is really long, is your summer a long one or short?

Where you are in the USA also helps us to give better answers. =o)

Good Luck!

Foxgloves, love-lies-bleeding, cockscomb and plume celosia, crocosmia, dahlia, gladiolus, late sunflowers, red hot poker (Kniphofia), hypericum, zinnia and solidago. Cooler shades can be found in echinops (globe thistle), Gomphrena, Chinese aster (Callistephus), Physostegia (obedience plant), scabiosa(pincushion flowers), chrysanthemum.
