I'm a tolly against gun control, even after this shooting and I'm a bleeding heart liberal! Is that bad?

People need to stop with the idea that getting tighter gun control will suddenly make MEN stop killing. Men by nature are killers. It is in our DNA. It's a sad fact.

Without guns we'd probably kill even more with bombs, poison, self made wmd's and old fashioned knives and swords.

If a man wants to kill...he'll kill no matter what the law is.

Gun laws only put guns in the hands of criminals and leave us defenseless.

I'm a tolly against gun control, even after this shooting and I'm a bleeding heart liberal! Is that bad?
You are absolutely correct, and no, it isn't bad.
Reply:Stop the gun insanity. Report It

Reply:Well my friend, I'm what many people would call a Conservative with a capital 'c', but I sharply and dramatically disagreee with some conservative positions. I guess I'm a fiscal conservative and a social liberal.

I too think that the US should have a well armed and well trained citizenry. I don't trust government....any government....and leaving the power in the hands of the police and army is foolhardy.

If you read the US Constitution, and I highly recommend everyone read it every so often, it says so.

Statistics have proven that gun control only disarms the law-abiding and that crime goes up in many cases.

Here's a joke, slightly off topic but I think you'll get it.

Q: What's the difference between a Socialist and a Communist?

A: The Communist has a gun.

Cheers!

Reply:Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill [HB 1572] was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." 01/31/2006.

HB 1572 was a state bill to allow college students to carry arms on campus. It was shot down in order to protect the students.

Talk about irony.
Reply:no matter what, the criminals will have guns.

I tend to be a liberal thinker, and think that gun control is hitting your target.

the problem is education and learing respect for firearms (well, the lack of it)

I still think Chris Rock has the best idea... start charging $5,000 per bullet... no one will want to waste ammo in that situation...
Reply:If gun control gets tight then only criminals will have guns.

I'm in favor of the second amendment.
Reply:I respect your position. And not just because I agree with you.
Reply:How many people do you think the killer could have killed if he just had a knife?

"Guns don't kill people, people do"....Guns just make it a hell of a lot easier.
Reply:What you say makes sense, but there are some gun controls that would seem to fall in the "common sense" department.

Like requiring biometric locks on all new handguns just makes sense to me.

Tagging ammo.. just makes sense to me.

There are controls that can be put in place that will still allow law abiding citizens to keep their weapons, but will make it harder for criminals.
Reply:Sounds pretty smart for a liberal.
Reply:No, that's not bad at all. Actually, this is the first question on this subject that didn't make me want to vomit.

Yes, the shootings are bad. Remove guns from law abiding citizens and see what happens.

It's a pointless argument though. People will still not realize the fact that people kill, not guns. If I had the mind set, I could just use my coffee cup..should that be taken away from me too?

Thank you for making sense and good points friend. Good luck
Reply:President Bush will use this as an excuse to microchip all firearms to make them trackable at local, state and federal law enforcement levels! Can't be too safe in this post 9-11 world!
Reply:Gun Control Causes Crime.

I think it was a tragedy first and foremost and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

The killer alone caused the crime, but the high number of victims is directly caused by gun control.

They were just sitting ducks with no way to defend themselves much like the victims of Colin Ferguson. Concealed-carry advocates warned us all long ago to expect tragedies like this as long as we have gun control.

When only criminals have guns the rest of us can only ponder tactics like "notifications."

In a state where concealed-carry is allowed or promoted, the loss of life could have been much less. He may have shot one or two, but a concealed-carrier would have dispatched him right quick.

Sadly there is no way to prevent a killer with a gun. In tribal Africa where there are no manufactured guns, tribesman make them from pipes and rubber-bands so clearly gun control is not the answer. You can make a gun out of wood in an hour! He could have stabbed just as many with a knife.

Since you will never stop the OFFENSE, we must allow ourselves a DEFENSE. We are not all of one culture anymore, so violence will only increase.

The only way to prevent these killing rampages is concealed-carry. Would you rather protect yourself or wait for the folly of police or school "notification?”
Reply:It's because of shootings like this that I am against gun control.
Reply:I'm sure some people are going to say the fact that you are a "bleeding heart liberal" is bad. I say neither is bad.

Like you, I WISH we lived in a society where this kind of stuff didn't happen, criminals wouldn't still get guns, police came 30 seconds after you called them.

I agree, Guns are a "necessary evil". I PERSONALLY want no part of them but I agree an otherwise law-abiding citizen has the right to own one.

Where we might part company -- i'm not sure -- is I don't see why we can't put the same kind of controls on them that we do automobiles. Run a background check on anyone who wants one, make it the law that they must pass a written test on Gun Safety and ownership laws, AND they must show that they know how to use a gun.

Wouldn't that save lives?
Reply:Dude, you are in serious trouble. You are about to be ostracized from the Bleeding-Heart Liberal Society. Their sheep-dipping techniques obviously haven't worked on you. One of the Cardinal Rules of being a liberal is that you're only a good liberal if you think and believe like all the other liberals because liberals are morally and intellectually superior in every way to conservatives. Just ask a liberal or the mainstream media; they'll tell you. Once word gets out that you espoused an opinion that was in line with the bigoted, narrow-minded, intolerant human scum known as conservatives it's all over but the shouting. You'll be joining Don Imus very soon. But hey, it's not all bad -- conservatives are always looking for people who can give an opinion and defend it with an intelligent, cogent argument as opposed to name-calling and rhetoric. So come on in and talk to us. We'd be interested in what you'd have to say, even if you disagree with our opinions.
Reply:No you are right on the money....people kill people, not guns!
Reply:I won't comment on your admitting about being a bleeding heart. (LOL) I respect your position, as balance is needed in every society.

Here is something to document the validity of your gun control position.

Peace will come to those that have the ability to defend themselves, but chose to communicate instead. The strong hesitate to attack an informed and armed society.

Reply:The reason for the 2nd Amendment was so the citizens could overthrow the government if it got intolerable again. That's no longer practical, but the 2nd Amendment still has symbolic value. It says individuals are sovereign, and we're just delegating sovereignty to the gov, subject to its continued good behavior. As for crime, I feel safer without a gun. But I'd feel much less safe if guns were outlawed because that would make the bad guys a lot more confident. Then maybe I'd feel the necessity to obtain a gun on the black market. Virginia allows hand guns (Senator Webb has one, which he's not supposed to take into D.C.). It's too bad none of those students was carrying a concealed handgun, maybe the college had a rule against it.
