So was George Washington a wimp and a bleeding heart liberal for his views on treatment of POW's?

While I do not agree with some of the laws of war and rules of engagement, there is one I do agree with; humane treatment of POW's.

During the Revolutionary War, George Washington forbade mistreatment of POW's, even thought the British and Hessians had a tendency to abuse and execute American rebel troops.

The logic used to justify mistreatment of Iraqi Pow's and terror suspects is the same the British used during the Revolutionary War. American rebel troops did not follow the normal rules of engagement.

Wahington said "We are fighting for a cause, and our cause requires that we behave with honor."

He also told his troops that by treating POW's humanely, they could be convinced to join the American cause.

So was George Washington a wimp and a bleeding heart liberal for his views on treatment of POW's?
I couldn't agree more!
Reply:He was NO wimp, but he sure was a liberal! Just like all of the founders of this great country. Not America, the United States of America! I love you all! Even the conservatives.
Reply:I agree we should treat POWs humanely however you cant compare treatment of British soldiers during the revolutionary war and terrorists of today. In that time war was about lining up man to man and fighting gentlemanly (for lack of a better word) I dont imagine anyone would worry about a British pow strapping a bomb to them selves and killing innocent civilians.
Reply:Neocons would think so.
Reply:Yes, and no. There were those that tried to desert George Washington, and he had those men killed, in a firing squad. He's own men, mind you, not POW's. Also, it's not likely that the POW's we capture in Iraq are willing to join our cause. And any torture that we inflict upon our POWs is nothing compared to getting you're head sawed (yes with a manual saw, goggle the video) off. George Washington also did something very unbecoming at that time, and went after officers. In those times, officers were never fired upon and recieved the best treatment, not with George in charge, if he could help it, he would take them out first..Watch the history channel some time.
Reply:You may have forgotten that many colonials were siding with England and nearly all Americans had relatives from that country. To mistreat the English would be akin to mistreating family. How would that look to colonials sitting on the fence? George was not a wimp but he also wasn't stupid.
